Sydney Transport – Air Road Rail & Water

March 11, 2009

Arriving in any new country can be daunting, though luckily the Sydney public transport system can get you from the airport to the centre of the city with minimal effort. Read on for information about each type of Sydney Transport – Air Road Rail and Water – or click on the link for more detailed information on each.

Sydney Airport Rail Link – Sydney Airport to Central Station

The Airport Rail Link runs directly from the International Airport Terminal through the Domestic Terminal at Sydney Airport to the City Circle train line stopping at Central, Museum, St James, Circular Quay, Wynyard and Town Hall Stations in the city. The complete trip takes around 20 minutes with a train leaving on average every 10 minutes.

A range of ticket options apply from a single one-way ticket, CityHopper, group fares to Day Tripper tickets. A comprehensive brochure which includes all the ticket types and prices, timetable and rail map may be picked up free from any rail station. More information on this service in terms of Departure (leaving Sydney, pickup from your hotel, etc) and Arrival (direct transfer to your hotel)…

Sydney Buses

Sydney Buses provides regular bus services between the major interchanges of Sydney CBD, Wynyard, Circular Quay,Townhall, Central, North Sydney, St Leonards, Lane Cove, Epping, Macquarie Centre, Chatswood, Manly, Northern beaches, Burwood, Parramatta, Rockdale, Maroubra, Bondi Junction, Bondi Beach, Sydney Airport and many more. Timetables, route maps, network maps, fare information, PrePay service information, and a guide to using the services are available from here.

Sydney Water Transport

Sydney Ferries operate throughout Sydney Harbour, its extensive network connecting 39 destinations and spanning approximately 37 kilometres from Parramatta in Sydney’s west, Manly in the north and Watsons Bay in the east.

Sydney Ferries enables visitors and Sydney-siders to experience an array of spectacular destinations and explore Sydney’s hidden treasures, which are scattered along Sydney Harbour’s foreshores, such as Balmain, Double Bay, Manly, Parramatta, Taronga Zoo and more.

Sydney Rail – Trains

Sydney’s underground railway, commonly referred to as the City Circle, provides an easy and inexpensive way of skirting around the main city area.

Because many of Sydney’s main tourist destinations and attractions are situated in this vicinity, the Circle represents the ideal way of getting around. You can get to Darling Harbour, a former dockside harbour that has been transformed into a major tourist spot, Circular Quay, the hub of ferry transport on Sydney Harbour, and The Rocks, the founding point for settlement in Australia and now a vibrant tourist region. There are six stations that form the main City Circle underground railway. They are (running clockwise): Central Railway Station, Townhall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St James and Museum.

CityRail

The CityRail network is one of the most cost effective, reliable and convenient ways to travel around Sydney and beyond, and covers suburban Sydney and extends to the Hunter, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and South Coast regions. Services begin around 4.00am – 5.00am in the morning and run till around midnight (later at some stations). After midnight, NightRide bus services operate in the Sydney suburban area.

CountryLink

Travelling long distances by train has been part of the Australian way of life for almost 150 years. CountryLink continues that tradition by carrying almost two million passengers every year to around 350 destinations in NSW, Queensland, the ACT and Victoria.

Metro Transport – Monorail & Light Rail

Metro Light Rail is Sydney’s newest transport system. Modern trams run from historic Central Station through vibrant Chinatown and Darling Harbour to the Star City Casino, the Sydney Fish Markets and Wentworth Park 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Information about services is available from: Metro Light Rail Infoline – 02 9285 5600

Sydney Monorail is a delightful experience for every tourist, offering a bird’s eye view of arguably the world’s most beautiful city, taking in the ‘must see’ hubs of Darling Harbour, Chinatown and the central shopping and business districts.

Sydney Festivals

February 27, 2009

Sydney is considered the cultural hub of Australia, and has some of the most diverse festivals throughout the year to prove it.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras witnesses people from all over the world travel to Sydney to take part in and watch the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Pride March, while the Living in Harmony Festival, which runs for over a month, celebrates Sydney’s cultural diversity and is aimed at strengthening ties and shortening cultural divides.

For food and drink lovers, there is the NSW Wine Week – hosting outdoor performances and a plethora of fine wines from New South Wales’ 14 wine regions, or there’s the Feastability Food and Wine Festival, held in September every year, where you can experience the eclectic international cuisines of the Newtown precinct, along with Australian wines, boutique beers, bakers and ice-cream makers while you enjoy the free performances and festive atmosphere.

Sydney art and craft and general markets

March 2, 2009

Sydneysiders love a market, and every weekend hundreds of art and craft and general markets pop up throughout Sydney and NSW where local artisans gather to sell their wares and give hunters and collectors of every sort the chance to rifle through tables of bargains and treasures.

The Sydney Opera House Market is a great day out for the family at the iconic Sydney Opera House, overlooking one of the world’s most beautiful harbours. This market presents an eclectic collection of quality handmade Australian arts and crafts, sold by the artisan who is always happy to chat about their wares. It’s held every Sunday and holds approximately 40 stalls.

The Lismore Car Boot Monthly Market is held on the first and third Sunday of every month. It’s held in the undercover car park of Lismore Shopping Square, which means it will never be spoiled by bad weather. It features stalls of art and craft as well as local produce, so you can restock the fridge while treasure hunting.

The Riverwood Car Boot Sale & Trash ‘N’ Treasure Market is a regular monthly feature (3rd Saturday of the month) from 8am to 1pm, selling household goods and knick-knacks.

Bargain Hunting Tips:

When it comes to bargain hunting, there are two methods guaranteed to yield great results: the Early-Bird method, and the Late-Comer method.

The Early-Bird method involves arriving as the stallholders are unpacking and setting up, and rifling through their wares as they do so. The drawback here is that they know you’re there hunting for the valuables and might not be very friendly. It’s early in the morning, don’t forget, and they’re busy. This method allows you to beat all other bargain hunters, though, which means you’re first in and, in the case of clothes hunting, best dressed!

The Late-Comer method (my favourite, as it involves a sleep in) involves arriving late and staying ’til closing, when the stallholders are packing up. Often they won’t want to have to load all their goods up and take them home again, and so are willing (often desperate) to get rid of it all. I’ve picked up many a treasure for under a dollar this way, including an antique typewriter for 50c. I don’t use it, but it’s a great ornament on our hallway cabinet and makes me look much more “learned” than I really am ;)

These are, of course, just a few of the many art, craft and general markets occurring weekly throughout Sydney and NSW. Visit this art, craft and general markets guide for a more detailed list to find one tailored to what you’re looking for.
